The Best Time to Visit Da Nang

Da Nang has two seasons, not four

Central Vietnam does not run on the four-season pattern of Hanoi in the north. Da Nang has a tropical climate with two seasons: a long dry season and a shorter, intense rainy season. The coolest months are December to February, and the hottest are June to August. Rain is the number that really shapes a trip, and it is very unevenly spread across the year.

The city gets a lot of rain overall, roughly 2,100 to 2,600 mm a year depending on the source, but most of it falls in just a few autumn months. That is why the same city can feel like a sun-soaked beach resort in March and a flooded, storm-battered coast in October. Plan around the rain, and the temperature mostly takes care of itself.

Here is the year at a glance. Temperatures are average daily high and low. Rainfall is an approximate monthly total, since sources differ on exact figures, so treat the numbers as directional rather than precise.

The dry season: sun, beach, and heat

The dry season runs roughly February to August. February to April is the driest, mildest stretch, with highs in the high 20s to low 30s C and very little rain. This is the best window for sightseeing, temples, and long days outdoors without the extreme heat. Weather models often single out late March as the peak of the year for warm-weather activities.

From May the heat builds, and June to August brings the hottest days, with highs around 34 to 35 degrees C. The sea is at its warmest then, which is great for swimming, but the midday sun is fierce, so plan the beach for early morning or late afternoon. Short, sharp showers start to appear by August as the wet season approaches.

The rainy season and the typhoon window

The rainy season runs roughly September to December, driven by the northeast monsoon, with rain rising from August and peaking in October and November. October is usually the wettest month of all. Rainfall in this period is not a light drizzle: it comes in heavy, sustained downpours that can flood streets within hours.

The main typhoon window runs from early September to about mid-December, and Da Nang and nearby Hoi An see direct storms most often in October and November. The risk is real, not theoretical. In October 2022, about 700 mm of rain fell on the city in 24 hours and caused major flooding. The 2020 central Vietnam floods, tied to a run of storms, killed roughly 189 people across the region.

Best time for the beach vs best time for sightseeing

These are two different answers, and mixing them up is a common mistake. For the beach and swimming, aim for April to August, when the sea is warmest, up to about 29 to 30 degrees C, and rain is low. For sightseeing without the extreme heat, February to April is the pick, with pleasant highs and little rain. One altitude note: Ba Na Hills sits far above the coast and is cooler and foggier, so a clear day at sea level does not guarantee a view of the Golden Bridge up top. Festivals worth timing your trip around

Two events are worth knowing. The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) is the city's signature event, usually running from late spring into early summer over several weeks, with international competition nights on Saturdays and big crowds along the Han River. Dates move each edition, so check the official schedule before you plan around it.

Tet, the Lunar New Year, is the biggest holiday and shifts each year with the lunar calendar, usually landing in late January or February. The weather during Tet is typically pleasant and mostly dry, around 20 to 25 degrees C. Note that many small local shops, restaurants, and museums close for roughly the first three days, while hotels, chains, and tourist-district businesses generally stay open.

Crowds and prices by season

Timing changes the bill as much as the weather. June to August is peak season, driven by Vietnamese school holidays and domestic tourism, so the city is busiest and priciest then. Beach-hotel rates can run 40 to 60 percent above shoulder-season levels and sell out weeks ahead.

• February to May: shoulder pricing, roughly 20 to 30 percent below the summer peak, with the best all-round weather. The value sweet spot.
• June to August: peak crowds and prices, but the warmest sea and the fireworks festival.
• September: a narrow budget window, with high season over and rates falling before the heaviest rain.
• October to November: cheapest and emptiest, but the wettest and most storm-prone. For flexible risk-takers only.
• December: low season with rates improving late, as the rain eases through the month.

Visiting in the rainy season anyway: a backup plan

If your dates land in the wet months, do not write the trip off. A good rainy day in Da Nang is an indoor day. Build a short list of covered options so a downpour changes your plan, not your mood.

• Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture: the world's largest collection of Cham stone art, across ten rooms, founded in 1915.
• Da Nang Museum: three floors and more than 2,500 artifacts on the city's history and culture.
• Air-conditioned malls: Vincom Plaza and Lotte Mart, with cinemas, arcades, shopping, and food.
• Han Market: a covered market for souvenirs, snacks, and people-watching out of the rain.
• The Marble Mountains: the caves and pagodas are partly sheltered, so they work in lighter rain.

On a checkout-day trip or a final beach morning

Whatever month you pick, one day is always awkward: the day you check out but your flight leaves in the evening. In the dry-season heat you might want a last beach morning, and in the rainy season you might want to duck between indoor spots. Either way, you do not want to drag your luggage around for it.
